Lily Parr started playing football with her brothers on waste ground in St Helens. At just 14 years of age she was spotted and recruited into the Dick, Kerr & Co factory ladies team, she got a job in the factory in Preston, plus 10 shillings in expenses per game. Her team played against both male and female teams. In 1921 the FA banned women from playing on their membership grounds. For shame!
Lily carried on playing wherever she was ‘allowed’ to, including touring the USA and winning 3, drawing 3, losing 3 against 9 top division male teams. She was an extraordinary player, famed for the sheer force in her shooting and her goal tally. In 2002 she was the only woman to be made an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall Of Fame.
Lily lived to see the FA finally lift the ban on female teams playing on their turf in 1971.
This rustic wooden coaster features artwork from Jo Burrows.
